Lina Chaplin, born in 1934, is the oldest active filmmaker in Israel – and one of the few in the world still consistently creating at the age of 90. Since emigrating from the Soviet Union in 1976, Chaplin has directed over 60 documentary and narrative films that have been screened at international festivals, won awards, and become landmarks in the Israeli cinematic landscape.

Her films are characterized by a sharp, uncompromising gaze at the realities of life in Israel – a blend of intimate observation with a broad sociopolitical perspective, always driven by profound human curiosity.

Chaplin’s immense contribution to Israeli cinema was formally recognized in 2022, when she received the Ophir Award for Lifetime Achievement. Her works engage in ongoing dialogue with questions of identity, migration, alienation, and belonging, alongside narrative works that illuminate hidden corners of the human soul and Israeli society. She is considered a trailblazing figure for generations of filmmakers, who see her as an inspiration for artistic integrity and perseverance.

This retrospective will feature full-length cornerstones of Chaplin’s oeuvre, along with selected excerpts from shorter works, screened in her presence. We invite you to join us on a rare journey through Chaplin’s creative world – a body of work spanning nearly five decades, and marked by a vitality, sensitivity, and creative freshness that defy time and age.
