We are living through an unprecedented global revolution, with volumes of information and data readily available, affecting every possible aspect in our lives. Personalized medicine, e-commerce, autonomous vehicles, content generation: These are just a handful of applications that not too long ago seemed like a far-fetched dream. At the heart of these applications lies the power to analyze data in an accurate and exhaustive manner. This is what data science is all about.
The science of statistics develops and applies a set of tools that help to understand natural and social models and confirm hypotheses regarding them, while modern data science largely deals with predicting outcomes based on a slew of available information. The data scientist must be trained in statistics, algorithmics, coding, and engineering. As part of their curriculum, students acquire tools and ways of thinking that allow optimal data analysis in complex systems and under uncertainty.
Department students acquire proficiency in mathematics, probability theory, coding, engineering, and statistics. They also gain experience in developing computerized modern data analysis tools and learn many skills. It’s a challenging road ahead, but graduates will gain the skills give them an edge as they develop careers in the today’s marketplace or further pursue academic or research career.
