Dr. Sagit Azari Wiesel from Sapir Academic College's Department of Public Administration and Policy and the Department of Economics and Accounting, together with Dr. Sharon Hadad, Head of the Department of Economics, have been awarded an inter institutional grant to establish an Applied Regional Development Research Institute.
Over the past six months, Dr. Azari Wiesel and Dr. Hadad have led the initiative to establish the institute. Its goal is to support data driven knowledge and policy development for effective and sustainable socioeconomic development in the Western Negev and northern Israel, including the Eastern and Western Galilee, based on the principles of regional development. The institute will operate as an independent, leading professional body that generates and makes applied data and knowledge accessible to support decision making by a wide range of regional stakeholders and to help shape socioeconomic development initiatives for the benefit of local residents and Israeli society as a whole.
The institute is being established through a partnership between the Western Galilee Cluster, the Western Negev Cluster, Sapir Academic College, Ben Gurion University of the Negev, and the Taub Center for Social Policy Studies in Israel. The initiative is funded by the Oganim Foundation through a grant totaling NIS 30 million over five years.
In addition to its importance for the region, the institute is intended to provide Sapir researchers with opportunities to conduct research on regional development and secure significant research funding in this field.
