Late 18th century. After a runaway peasant attempts to jump from a rooftop with homemade wings, the villagers begin strictly enforcing traditional norms. The wings are burned, a traveling actress is murdered, and in one household, twin sisters are separated — one blamed for the illness of the other. Unwilling to accept guilt, the girl starts secretly watching experiments in flight.
