About The Younes and Soraya Nazarian Academic Library

The Sapir College Library was established more than 50 years ago. The library initially served the Shaar Hanegev Regional School. Over the years, as Sapir developed into an academic college, the library expanded its services for its students and staff while remaining a public and cultural institution for the residents of Shaar Hanegev. For the past half a century its vision has remained unchanged:  to provide a knowledge and service center for students, researchers and the wider community.
Due to the college’s growth and development there was a need for expanded facilities.  In 2009, thanks to the generosity of Mr. Younes and Mrs. Soraya Nazarian, a new library wing was built. The construction doubled the library's size to 4,000 square meters. The new wing added study areas, a multimedia department, and dozens of computer workstations. In accordance with the Nazarian’s request, the ground level of the new wing is dedicated to communal activities with designated spaces for children and youth activities and programs for seniors.
In June 2009, Sapir College inaugurated the new library wing named in honor of the Nazarians. Mr. Younes Nazarian, who lit  a beacon at Israel's 61st Independence Day ceremony, is one of the important  leaders of the Jewish community in Los Angeles and one of the most prominent  Jewish activists of Iranian descent in the USA. Mr. and Mrs. Nazarian attended the inauguration together with their daughters Sharon and Shula, their sons Sam and David, grandchildren and numerous friends.  During the ceremony Mr. Nazarian commented: "We waited many years for this day. From the first day we visited Sapir College my family and I fell in love with the college and with all that it represents. We also adore the area residents, the students and faculty for withstanding the tough security situation".  He went on to say that: "Every building is like a new child for me. Today, a new child was born to me and to my wife, and we are very happy and proud to see that this child is so successful both in its architecture and its interior design." Mrs. Soraya Nazarian's sculpture "Reflection", which stands next to the library entrance, was unveiled as part of the ceremony. "I am very proud and excited that my sculpture will be displayed at this wonderful and beautiful college", Mrs. Nazarian said as she unveiled the sculpture, adding: "We are very proud to contribute to this college and are glad to help and aid institutions of higher learning in order to narrow the gaps between the center and periphery."
